Where would you go?

A friend of mine recently told me about a vacation she is planning with her husband in the near future. They are going to go to Texas because both of their favorite visual artists are having shows in fairly close proximity. My friend is an art history professor, so to a certain extent, art is kind of her life, but she also LOVES it. In fact, when she was telling me about her favorite artist, she got kind of giddy as she explained that it was his first art show in the United States in 25 years!

Wow.

As I listened to her, I felt kind of envious-- was there anything that I was THAT passionate about that I would plan a whole trip around it? What was my mecca?

When I was on my mission, I had a calendar that I loved, with beautiful pictures around the world. My favorite was of some whitewashed houses on the edge of a cliff with brilliant blue roofs. The picture was taken in Santorini, Greece.

I kept that picture with me long after the calendar expired. I promised myself that someday I would go to that place in the picture!

and I did. And it was the most wonderfully beautiful, and satisfying trip. Better than the photo I had coveted.

Now, I think the only thing that would inspire me to build a trip around it, is food! Like a tour of the South's best BBQ, or a trip around Julia Child's french restaurants, or a trip to find the best pizza in Italy. In fact, Richard and I want to visit all of the Michelin Star restaurants in the country. It will take time, and it will take money, but I know it will be a great adventure. Food. That is my inspiration.

What is yours?

I feel famous: I served as content for a paragraph on your blog! I think it's great that you're passionate about food (and that food could inspire you to go on a great trip). In a way, our two passions are quite similar: a great plate of food is just as much as work of art as a painting by Michelangelo.

You are TOTALLY famous M. So . . . I feel like travel is my passion. Where does that leave me? Take for example our Disney World trip. It wasn't so much the place we were going as the hours I spent pouring over tourist books & online tips. I organized my grandparents 60th anniversary cruise for 20+ people. I organized my high school senior trip to the Oregon coast. I planned every detail of our Costa Rica trip with 2 toddlers. Seriously . . . give me a vacation to plan (or even a party) and I'll go crazy with it. Maybe I should have been a travel agent or flight attendant.

I would say that my inspiration for travel is mostly history (although scenery is very nice too!) I'm not picky what kind of history, mind you, but I am always curiuos about what happened in whatever place I'm visiting.
Also, I would love to do some cool historic traveling like hiking the Lewis and Clark Trail, or something like that.
