Whenever we stay at my mom's house, Richard and I like to do a little bit of the cooking. Its one of the ways we show our love! However, the most common spices used in my mom's house are salt and pepper, so while her cupboard is stocked with spices, very few are usable for this reason:
The expiration date on this particular canister of thyme is 1974!
Thats right, 1974. So well before either Richard and I were ever born, this thyme had already seen and moved past its heyday. My parents have moved quite a few times since 1974, and every time they did, this thyme came with them.
Unfortunately, it was not the only canister of its kind in the cupboard. Like I said, my parents prefer salt and pepper, so roughly half of the spices came from the 1970's or 1980's and had probably been used in only one recipe (clipped probably from the sunday paper...my mom liked to do that). Before I left St. George, I helped my mom clean out some of those expired spices, but I couldn't resist taking a picture.

I have to tell you I busted up laughing when I read this. When we were in CA for Christmas, Miles went into the garage to find something to eat. He brought out a "Simply Asia" meal. He cooked up the noodles. (We thought it smelled a little funny). He added the sauce. (Definitely smelled off). And I put the peanut packet on mine (for sure off). We took a bite and I almost vomited. The sauce was so gross and the peanuts were totally rancid. Blech! Makes me sick just thinking about it. Miles checked the box. It expired in 2007. He started going through the garage to clean it out (per my Mom's approval) and then she started telling him not to throw things out (from 2001) because they'd still be fine. Sigh. Anyway...this definitely takes the cake. But at least your mom probably wasn't using them and even if she did, they would likely just have lost their flavor.
