I saved a lizard yesterday. It was almost like an episode of "ER" or "Chicago Hope" or "Grey's Anatomy" only without the sex and relationship complications.
Richard, Anna, and I were at our neighborhood pool enjoying some final summer days. Richard and I were taking turns carrying Anna around as she was not going to put up with merely being left in her car seat or on a blanket in the shade. As I was swimming, Richard pointed out a beautiful little lizard swimming beside me. He was tiny with a long blue tail and a speckled backside. I didn't get too close because he kind of looked like a small crocodile and he could have been man-eating for all I knew. However, we admired him and went about our way.
As we were getting ready to go home, Richard remarked that he thought the lizard was now dead because he was floating along the bottom of the pool. I rushed over and it looked like he was indeed lifeless. I ran and got the pool strainer thingy that looks like a large fish net and fished him out from the bottom. He was limp, like a dead fish, and we couldn't see any movement right away. I almost started crying. I don't mind dead cockroaches, but this guy was really beautiful-- and anytime something beautiful dies, it is sad.
After a minute or so, I saw his chest move, just once. So I took a small stick, and transferred him to a sunny spot by the pool. we continued to monitor him for a few minutes, and although his breathing in the beginning was sporadic and kind of convulsive (I think he was probably trying to get water out of his lungs), after a period of time, his breathing began to speed up and then he moved his legs a little.
I am proud to say that the lizard is now back in tip top lizard shape. He was probably a working father, just scavenging for bugs on the pool's surface for his little lizard children....
Now, if any of you are lizard experts and happen to know that a small desert lizard can survive and thrive on the bottom of a pool for a period of time, don't tell me....let me enjoy my heroism!
