Rachael's Birthday Extravaganza

If you thought theme parties were only for 8 year olds, then you have never attended one of my birthday parties.  I love themes.  And maybe acting like an 8 year old is not so bad for someone who just turned 32.
This year's theme was a family and friends fun run/walk and BBQ.  I had a Saturday birthday that I didn't want to waste.  I wanted it to be a party to end all other parties that I had ever had and combine all my favorite things-- friends, food, and running! We happen to live at the juncture of a trail that winds around two close lakes.  So we had people meet at our house at 10:30, we carbo-loaded with home made cinnamon rolls, and then started our race around the lakes.
This is our crew of hardcore racers!
The "meet you at the finish line" Moilanen family.
The Hong family, bringing their game faces straight from the Boston marathon.
Elaine and Suzanne: Hungry for a victory.
Monica and Sam:  Watch out-- she'll throw elbows if you get in her way!
The Evans family with new twins.  You are never too young to start racing competitively. I am pretty sure Simon and Jack will fight forever about who was born first
The Roses!  Anna was sad because she "wanted to be fastest first!"
The Smart women.  They don't just show up-- they show up to win!

And there they go....
Ladies and Gentleman, in a brilliant strategic move, Jeremy Bowen used his amazing bowstaff skills to beat two toddlers and a mom pushing her double stroller for the victory.
Second place to Hailey and Jack!
Josh and Justine.  Nothing "Gentle" about this couple.  I would say Josh beat Justine by a fingertip but Justine had a better game face.

Now time for the party!  We have never really had a backyard before, so we were excited to have a full on BBQ picnic party.  And the weather complied just enough (no sun, but no rain either!)
All guests were welcomed at the door
Everyone enjoys a good countdown!
And it wouldn't be a party without an open bar....a CANDY bar that is!
We had out some sidewalk chalk so that the kids could color, or write happy birthday messages to me...or color...

Some lawn games would go nicely...
And a little charming conversation.
That is one happy birthday girl!
I couldn't resist wearing sequins on my birthday.
The candles may have been imaginary, but the salted caramel chocolate cake was very real!!
And I think I pretty much have everything a girl could want on her birthday...
the love of a handsome man!

Thank you to everyone who came to my extravaganza and helped me feel so very loved.
