Learning new things

Usually, I would say that I hate to learn new things. Not that I don't like having new skills, I just don't like the learning curve-- that period of time when you naturally stink at whatever you are doing.

I also usually don't like to involve other people in my learning curve. Thus it was with great hesitation that I agreed to take over cutting Richard's hair from the good people at Great Clips or wherever he was going.

So after purchasing a hair cutting kit from Target, and watching a video on youtube called "how to cut your man's hair," I attempted to learn a new skill without making Richard the laughing stock of the whole office.

With a little guidance from Richard (he was going to content himself with the bull cut I had given him before agreeing to allow me to try again), after about an hour he looked relatively normal. I told him he looked better than his worst haircut at a salon.

And I have to admit, I had a lot of fun. I kind of like this whole "learning a new skill" thing. And Richard is glad I don't ask him about his family or love life while I am cutting his hair. Not that I am planning on switching professions, but I think I can handle the hair of the men in my life from now on.

It's harder than most people think. My mom is a beautician and I wouldn't touch my hubby's hair or my kids until she taught me what to do. She is still miles better than me and I usually wait for her to do the deed, but I can do it if she isn't coming to visit in time.

I have now successfully cut Nate's hair twice. The first time it took forever. I was so slow. The second time not as long. It is not the most fabulous hair cut ever, but I would say it's not too bad. Good Luck with it! I hope your skills and mine keep getting better.

I can't touch Ryan's hair with a ten foot pole. Maybe if I took some time to develop my skill he would.. pretty sure it'd still be a 'no'. Did I tell you kate calls the room downstairs, Rachael and Anna's room? I love it!
