lol
"I do not think it means what you think it means..." (name that movie quote)
the first time I ever saw the acronym "lol" was while I was texting a frienda few years ago. I thought it meant "lots of love." I was astounded when my friend told me it meant "laugh out loud"
the question crossed my mind "did my friend really laugh out loud?" "was I really that funny?"
And while I consider myself a very humorous person, the answer to that question, most of the time, is no.
For example-- a relative texted me, asking if I had remembereed to mail something to her that she had requested. I told her that I had forgotten and that I would do it the following day. She said "thanks Rachael lol."
For hours I kept trying to figure out what had been so funny about forgetting to mail a package that it had caused a perfectly normal person to laugh out loud...
my conclusion is that there is an oversaturation of "lol" ing in the world. If people were really laughing out loud as much as they seem to indicate in their texts, wouldn't I hear it outside my door....as I buy groceries...in church even (cause I know there is texting going on there).
also, I have never once seen a person "ROFL"

For the record, I did actually LOL when I read this post.
For some reason, I feel weird writing ROFL. I don't mind writing LOL (even if I haven't actually laughed out loud), but somehow I feel weird describing myself rolling on the floor. I dunno. Maybe it's because I obviously can't be rolling on the floor laughing if I have enough faculty to be able to type/text "ROFL."
Hmm. Maybe I take ROFL too seriously. :)
my favorite is when people I know don't swear use abbreviations that contain a naughty word. Should I let them know?
shauna -- you should kindly let them know the appropriate substitution is "lmbo"
I use ROFL when what I'm really doing is Ling OL. We are exaggerating our emotions!
LOL! Thats funny! When I capitalize it, it means I really did laugh out loud. When I lol it means I smiled and usually just in my head. :) Thats pretty funny though because when people I am close to put lol I usually ask them if they really laughed out loud. Actually most of the time I laugh out loud I put hahahahah and depending on the length of the a and h, it means the level of laughter. haha (just a little chuckle there).
