Christmas part 2: the Ken Jennings of Christmas

Richard is the world's best gift giver.
I used to think I was really thoughtful...
and then I met Richard, and he blows me away every year.
So I knew I had to do something extreme this Christmas.

And what did I come up with? Ken Jennings-- the Greatest Jeopardy! champion in history.
No I did not kidnap and giftwrap him. I just had him give Richard a call on Christmas Eve.
And no, I do not know him, we are not "homies" and I did not blackmail him in any way.

I just found his email on his website, wrote him an email expressing my wish that we could have him over for dinner to which he politely declined (actually, he said "Christmas is kind of busy around the Jennings household, and no offense, but you are a complete stranger"). But he did offer to give Richard a phone call at a day and time of my choosing.

Well, in my family, we always open a gift on Christmas Eve. So Ken Jennings was my gift to Richard. Ken actually remarked to Richard, "I hope your wife got you more for Christmas than just a phone call from me-- because that was pretty cheap and easy." (I did, don't worry!).
They talked about Ken's upcoming Jeopardy!/IBM challenge, wherein Ken will go head to head against a computer in the ultimate Jeopardy! showdown, and they talked about BYU, their mutual love of trivia and being on academic teams. They actually have a lot in common...except for the fact that Ken is a gajillionaire.

When Richard finished talking, he face was just a little flushed and he looked like a starstruck teenager. I knew he was really excited that he got to talk to his hero.

Oh, and I assured Ken that we wouldn't stalk him in the future or show up at his door or exploit his phone number in any way. And I intend to keep my promise...after I show up at his ward on Sunday and surreptiously take his picture. JUST KIDDING!!

That is such an awesome gift! How creative. So here's a little Ken trivia for you . . . he actually lived in South Korea at the same time we did. He was my sister's age, so they were in the same classes at church. Sadly, he did not share any of his winnings with her.

So fun! My dad and I love Ken Jennings and Ken's dad was one of my Bishops at BYU.

What a fun gift! It sounds like Richard really enjoyed it.

Haha, that is awesome. I actively root against all Jeopardy champions so they will not threaten Brother Jennings' streak. Of course, none of them even come close.

Still, the earlier they're out, the better, I say.
